There are hundreds of industry terms and acronyms that SEO experts use. When you start talking about internet marketing or SEO without providing a definition of these terms, their meaning gets quickly obfuscated by the acronyms.

  • Analytics

Analytics is the term used to describe a program that assists in gathering and analyzing data about website usage. There are many free analytics programs that help you collect and analyze data about website usage. Google analytics is one of the best software programs that let you measure your advertising ROI. 

  • Anchor text

Anchor text is the term used in the SEO industry for hyperlinked text. Anchor text helps search engines to understand what the destination page is about, and what the user will see when if he/she clicks through.  Anchor text is prevalent in the SEO industry as it helps in enhancing search engine ranking. It is essential to optimize anchor text internally as well as for articles and press releases that are distributed at large scales. The best way is to keep anchor text natural in articles, blogs and press releases. 

  • Authority site

Authority sites are websites that have many incoming links from other related sites. Due to the simultaneous citation from trusted sites, authority sites have high trust and PageRank.  An authority site is a very high-quality website that is respected by experts of the industry because people love to visit these sites and share it with others.  

  • Blog

The blog is that part of a website where the content is published on a regular basis. Each new blog post on a search engine is a web page that search engine sees. In other words, blogs are the best way to enhance the visibility of the website – as each page is seen with unique identity and rank. Blogs give you an opportunity to be found online. However, one should keep the blog within their own domain to improve search engine results. 

  • Canonical URL

Canonical URL is the SEO term used to describe the URLs that have duplicate content. Search engines would not be sure which one to index if they find similar content on multiple pages. By using canonical links, SEO professionals can specify which page should take precedence in search engines. It is the best practice to filter the pages when there are multiple pages with identical content.  Specifying the canonical URL help search engines which address is best for a piece of content. 

  • Content Management System (CMS)

Content management system (CMS) is the phrase used to describe a software program that separates the webmaster’s tasks from content creation. The publisher can be effective without having coding skills if they choose to do.  This program is used to support multiple users working in a collaborative environment. The most popular content management systems are – Drupal, Joomla, WordPress, Magento etc. 

  • Indexing

Indexing is the term used to describe the search engine process for collecting and storing data across the web. The search engine is constantly searching across the web for updated pages to add to their massive database of information. When the search engines find new or updated content, they index the page and add a copy of it to their database. These pages can be retrieved during searching relevant content.

The keyword is another important and popular SEO term that is used widely. A keyword(s) is a word that exemplifies the brand, services or products. However, keywords should not be overused — as it actually hurt your ranking. 

  • Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI)

Latent Semantic Indexing is a very important factor for search engines, especially when ranking your web page. It is said that search engines analyze the content on the page and search for LSI keywords that support the main keyword. Finding such pages will boost the rankings of the main keyword. LSI keywords are similar to the main keywords and are found along with the main keyword. In short, LSI is a way to check whether the text is genuine or not.  

  • Link building

Link building is the process of getting more inbound links to your website. This SEO strategy plays a very important role in improving search engine rankings.  Link building is one of the biggest SEO terms. If you want to have a well-ranked page, you have to get many quality backlinks to it. 

  • Meta description

The meta description is another important HTML tag, whose main purpose is to describe the page. The user and search engines will know what the page is about by reading a few lines of Meta description. The meta description is always displayed on the search engine results page below the title. It is important to have unique and relevant descriptions just like title tags to improve visibility on search engine results. Make sure to include a call-to-action in Meta description to make it look natural. 

  • On-Page SEO

There are two main elements of SEO – on-page and off-page. On-page SEO is the term used for those practices that you do everything on your page to improve its ranking. On-page SEO includes – tuning the HTML structure, improving title tags, making the site load faster, descriptions, checking the keyword usage etc. 

  • Page Rank

Page Rank is usually assigned by Google from 0-10. The ranking is based on certain factors and indicates how good the overall SEO of your website is. Pages with high ranks are usually the ones that are highly recognizable and popular across the internet. If you want to enhance the visibility of your website, your web page should have good Pagerank.  

  • Page title

The page title is the name given to your web page, which is often seen on the top of the browser window. The page title should contain relevant keywords and phrases. The words at the beginning of the page title should be highly weighted than the words at the end of the page title. 

  • Ranking factor

Search engines determine where to rank a certain page based on a number of factors such as – title tag, Meta description, keywords, inbound links etc. All these factors are known as a ranking factor – as they determine where to rank a certain page. 

  • RSS feed

RSS feed stands for Really Simple Syndication that provides an update on new content from a web source. You can set up an RSS feed for the website or blog to help the followers stay updated when new content is released. 

  • SERP

SERP stands for Search Engine Results Page. This is what users get when they type in a search query. It displays a page of search results after typing the keywords or phrases on the search box. Websites with good PageRank are listed on the first Search Engine Results Page.  When the user searches something on search engines, the pages listed with relevance to the search is called SERP. 

  • Sitemap

A sitemap is a special document created by the webmaster or a software program that provides a map of all the pages on the website to make it easier for a search engine to index that website. A sitemap is a file on a website that is meant for search engines to inform them where to find all the pages of the website. These pages are then shown up on search engine results page. 

  • Spider (bot, Crawler)

Spider is a computer program that crawls across the internet and collects information about websites. This software program searches for new sites and checks what’s going on them. It sends the data back to Google so that they can index and rank these sites. 

  • Title tag

Title tag, also known as page title is a tag in HTML that represents the page’s title and can be seen on the tabs in your browser or headline of a search result. Title tag helps both the users and search engines to identify what your website or web pages are about. The best way to improve search results is to create unique and relevant titles for each one of the page.
